Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has seized a stolen 850 pound emerald from suspects in Las Vegas. the emerald, known as the Bahia Emerald was mined in Brazil and is the second largest gem of it's kind in the world. It was stolen from it's vault in South El Monte by way of phony paperwork. The suspects have not been arrested nor named and the 850 pound emerald will remain in the sheriffs custody until a judge determines who the real owner is.
The 850 pound emerald is raw and uncut and claimed to have been appraised at $370 million. Earlier the gem had been listed on ebay for a BIN of $75 million. In it's raw state the gem doesn't appear to have a value of many milliions of dollars.
